When Is Urgent Dental Care the Right Call?

Dental emergencies strike without warning, and prompt action can be the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you have severe pain, active bleeding or trauma, don't wait, our Marylebone team prioritises urgent cases for same-day relief, subject to availability.

Severe Tooth Pain

If you are experiencing persistent, throbbing pain that radiates to the jaw, ear, or neck, and it isn't relieved by standard over-the-counter painkillers, this often indicates deep decay, an exposed nerve, or an infection. Ignoring this pain can lead to the loss of the tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsion)

This is a critical medical and dental emergency. Time is of the essence. If a permanent tooth is reimplanted soon after being knocked out, it has the highest chance of survival. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If possible, place it back in the socket or keep it in a container of milk or saliva and call us immediately.

Dental Abscess or Swelling

Swelling in your gums, face, cheek, or neck signals a significant infection. If left untreated, a dental abscess can spread to other parts of the body and even restrict breathing. If you have swelling accompanied by a fever, this is an emergency.

Uncontrollable Bleeding

It is normal for minor bleeding to occur after an extraction, but if bleeding from a dental injury or recent surgery doesn't stop after applying firm pressure for 20 minutes, you must seek medical help immediately. This is particularly important for patients on blood-thinning medication.

Lost Filling or Crown

While not always initially painful, leaving inner tooth tissue exposed can lead to further structural damage, decay, infection and extreme sensitivity to hot and cold. We aim to restore your tooth on the same day to prevent the need for more invasive treatment later.

Not sure if it's a dental emergency?

It is always better to check. Call our team on 020 7183 0692, we can triage your symptoms over the phone and advise on the best next steps. You can also book online at any time.

Your Emergency Appointment, Step by Step

A calm, patient-centred approach to urgent care. At Wimpole Street Medical and Dental, our clinicians handle your dental emergency with skill, responsiveness and genuine care.

1

Same-Day Appointments, Subject to Availability

When you call, our reception team will prioritise your case and offer the first available appointment, in many instances the same day. We are open 6 days a week, and our aim is to relieve your pain as soon as we can and begin treatment without delay where clinically necessary.

2

Prompt Pain Relief & Diagnostics

When you arrive at our Wimpole Street practice, we review your medical history and listen carefully to your symptoms. If you are in severe dental pain, we identify the cause using visual examination and digital X-rays where necessary. Easing your discomfort is our first priority, this usually involves local anaesthetic so you feel as comfortable as possible before any restorative treatment begins.

3

Same-Day Treatment & Stabilization

Once your pain is under control and the area is numb, we usually start treatment immediately. We do not just "patch it up". Based on your specific condition, your emergency dentist may re-cement or fix broken dentures, bridges, or crowns; perform urgent tooth extractions; drain abscesses and prescribe antibiotics; repair chipped teeth with composite bonding; or place temporary or permanent restorations.

Need Urgent Dental Care Today?

We are open and ready to help. Avoid long waiting lists and arrange a private emergency appointment at Wimpole Street Medical and Dental, subject to availability.

What to Do While You Wait

Knocked-out tooth

Hold by the crown, not the root. Place in milk or saliva and call us immediately.

Dental abscess

Apply a cold compress. Do not attempt to burst it. Take pain relief if appropriate and contact us the same day.

Lost crown or filling

Cover the area with dental wax or sugar-free gum. Avoid chewing on that side.

Broken tooth

Rinse with warm water. Apply pressure if bleeding. Keep any fragments safe and bring them with you.

Emergency Root Canal & Crown for Severely Fractured Front Tooth

by Dr Yasha Shirazi

The patient presented with a front tooth fractured almost halfway, extremely sensitive and painful. After emergency root canal treatment, a fibre post was placed and a custom crown fitted to fully restore strength and appearance.

The adjacent chipped tooth was repaired with composite edge bonding. Both teeth were subtly reshaped for a balanced, natural-looking result.
