Understanding Impacted Wisdom Teeth

When there isn't enough space for wisdom teeth to emerge properly, they become "impacted." Here are the common types:

Vertical Impaction

Tooth is straight but trapped below gum

Moderate

Horizontal Impaction

Tooth lying completely sideways

Complex

Mesial Impaction

Tooth angled toward front of mouth

Most common

Distal Impaction

Tooth angled toward back of mouth

Simple vs. Surgical Extraction: Which Do You Need?

Depending on the position of your tooth (as described above), your dentist will recommend one of two approaches:

1

Simple Extraction

This is performed on wisdom teeth that have fully erupted and are visible. The dentist uses an elevator to gently lift the tooth and forceps to remove it. No incision is usually required, and recovery is faster.

2

Surgical Extraction

This is necessary for impacted teeth trapped under the gum or bone. A small incision is made in the gum to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may be sectioned (divided) into smaller pieces to make removal easier and minimize bone removal. This technique reduces trauma to the jaw and speeds up healing.
