Who Should Consider the Uric Acid Test?
Individuals with acute joint inflammation (especially the big toe, ankle, or knee) suggestive of gout. Those with recurrent kidney stones. Patients with metabolic syndrome, obesity, or on diuretics.
During an acute gout flare, uric acid levels may actually be normal or low, so timing of testing matters. Long-term management targets a level below 360 micromol/L.
