CA 125 is a protein found on the surface of ovarian cancer cells and some normal tissues. Blood levels may be elevated in ovarian malignancy as well as several benign conditions.
Who Should Consider the CA-125 Test?
Women with a pelvic mass, persistent bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, early satiety, or urinary urgency. Patients under surveillance after ovarian cancer treatment.
CA 125 alone cannot diagnose ovarian cancer. It is also elevated in endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, liver disease, and during menstruation. It is most useful for monitoring known ovarian cancer treatment response.
