This PCR-based test measures the number of CAG repeats to determine whether an individual carries the pathogenic expansion associated with the disease.

Who Should Consider Huntington Disease Testing?
Individuals with a family history of Huntington disease who wish to know their genetic status (predictive testing). Those presenting with chorea, cognitive decline, or psychiatric symptoms suggestive of Huntington disease (diagnostic testing). This is a life-changing genetic test and pre-test genetic counselling is mandatory.
Normal alleles have up to 26 CAG repeats. Intermediate alleles (27-35 repeats) are not associated with disease but may expand in future generations. Reduced penetrance alleles (36-39 repeats) may or may not cause disease. Full penetrance alleles (40 or more repeats) will cause disease if the individual lives long enough.
A trained nurse collects the blood sample by standard venepuncture at our clinic on Wimpole Street, a short walk from Bond Street and Oxford Circus stations. A referral from a clinical neurologist or clinical geneticist is required, please call 020 7183 0692 to arrange.
