Is an Allergy Test Right for You?

Recurring, unexplained symptoms are often the prompt. An IgE blood test can help narrow down possible triggers to discuss with your doctor.

Hay Fever & Rhinitis

Sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked nose, seasonal or year-round

Food Reactions

Hives, swelling, stomach upset or tingling after eating

Skin Reactions

Eczema flare-ups, hives or itching with an unclear trigger

Drug Sensitivities

Suspected reactions to penicillin or other antibiotics

Why an IgE Blood Test?

  • No need to stop antihistamines, unlike skin-prick testing, blood IgE results are unaffected by allergy medication.
  • One sample, many answers, hundreds of allergens can be screened from a single venous draw.
  • Suitable for eczema-prone or sensitive skin, no skin exposure to allergens required.

Important to know

A positive IgE result shows sensitisation to an allergen, it does not by itself confirm a clinical allergy. Your written laboratory report should be interpreted by a GP or allergy specialist alongside your symptoms and history. All samples are analysed at UKAS-accredited UK laboratories by our nurse-led clinic.

Allergy Testing FAQs

How does a blood allergy test work?
Our nurses collect a small venous blood sample, which a UKAS-accredited UK laboratory analyses for allergen-specific IgE antibodies. Raised IgE to a particular allergen indicates sensitisation, something your GP or specialist can interpret alongside your symptoms.
Do I have to stop antihistamines before testing?
No. Unlike skin-prick testing, IgE blood tests are unaffected by antihistamines, so you can continue your medication as normal before your appointment.
Is a GP referral needed?
No. Every allergy test is self-referral, book online and attend your appointment at our Marylebone clinic.
Should I fast before an allergy test?
No fasting is needed. Eat and drink normally before your appointment.
When will my results arrive?
Most allergy panel results are ready within 3–5 working days via our secure portal. The comprehensive ALEX³ test may take slightly longer.
What happens if a result comes back positive?
You receive a written laboratory report showing your IgE results. A positive result indicates sensitisation to an allergen and should be interpreted alongside your symptoms by a GP or allergy specialist, who can advise on management. We are a diagnostic testing service and do not provide allergy treatment.
How do I choose the right allergy test?
For the broadest picture with multiple unexplained symptoms, the ALEX³ test screens over 300 allergens from one sample. If you suspect a specific category, nuts, seafood or pollen, say, a targeted profile is more economical. To confirm a single known trigger, an individual allergen test from £48 is usually enough.
